Rangeley, Maine
Participants will Grind it out as they race over hills and around ponds as they follow mostly Gravel roads through the Northwoods of Maine in the 6th Annual Maine Gravel Grind in 2019.
2019 Race details
We will have a mass start this again year. All races will start at 9 am.
There are Three routes this year: 35, 50, 68!!!
The ORIGINAL route is 34.25 miles and the NEW route is 68.33 miles (modified on 9/25/15). Both routes start off on the road take a first trip onto gravel around Dodge Pond then back on the road until entering different gravel routes. Both routes have their entrance onto the Seven island Land Managements gravel roads off route 16 and will follow scenic routes through some of Maines' beautiful NORTHWOODS.
You asked for more miles so we have added an option that is more than double the distance!
It would not be Western Maine without being pretty hilly terrain so be prepared to test yourself. Cyclist support vehicles for accidents/breakdowns and multiple rest stops on the route with opportunities for cyclists to stop for water, a quick energy bar or simply a chance to give your legs a rest. Hop back on your bike, cross the finish line, and join us at AJ's Cycles for a post ride BBQ. Grab a bite to eat at one of the great local restaurants and maybe take a stroll down Main Street when you are done to experience the great businesses that Rangeley has to offer.
Note: Event will take place rain or shine; all registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Cyclists will ride at their own risk and must wear a helmet. Route is challenging with several hills and is not recommended for true beginners. Registration requires waiver.
PRIZES
Cash prize (amount TBD) for each 1st place female and male participant in both race routes. 2nd and 3rd place will receive gear or other prizes.
Registration - Find us on Bikereg. https://www.bikereg.com/northwoods-gravel-grind
Fees will rise closer to race date.
You can also register to VOLUNTEER online!
Volunteers can help by fundraising (you will get your own personal fundraising page to manage) and/or by helping to organize, set up or run the event.

Rules and General Information:
- Helmets MUST be worn and fastened at all times while on the bike.
- The course and all roads are open to traffic. ALL racers MUST obey all rules of the road along the course, at intersections and road crossings. Racers should yield to all traffic and should stop at all road crossings where traffic is present. There may be road crossings with heavy car and truck traffic. There may be an area of the course where the racers will share the road with car and truck traffic. Please keep to the right and ride single file except where passing. Following the rules of the road is for your own safety.
- Traffic may include horses. Horseback riders have the right of way on trails. Please ask the rider what to do if you encounter a horse on the trail.
- Though there will be an aid station(s) and limited support on the course, racers should carry with them what they need including tools, parts and nutrition.
- Course cue sheets will be distributed to all riders at packet pickup. Additional cue sheets will be available at the start-finish area and at the mid-point aid station. The courses will be marked with signage.
- Cyclocross, Gravel Grind, Mountain and Road bikes will be allowed and can be used. The best choice would be a cyclocross or gravel grind bike. A minimum of 28c wide tires with tread is recommended. Gravel can be very hard on tires with the possibility of potholes throughout. Don’t ruin your race by cutting an expensive tubular.
- No tri-bars or aero bars.
- Support crews are not permitted to help racers on the course except for the aid station. No motor pacing, no pacing from a rider not in the race, no external support. No use of the course prior to race start will be permitted.
- Please let the race officials or staff know if you leave the race. We want to ensure everyone is safe and accounted for at the end of the day.
- Pets are not permitted on the course.
- Absolutely no littering on the course. Littering on course will result in disqualification. It is vital we leave the area as we found it.
